Privacy
Ask Ama stores as little as it can. This page lists everything it keeps, and where.
Learning
You don't need an account to use Ask Ama, and learners never sign in.
Cookies
The site sets one cookie for visitors, NEXT_LOCALE. It remembers the language you chose and lasts a year.
The admin who checks recordings signs in, and that uses Supabase sign-in cookies. They are only set for the admin, never for visitors.
Saved on your device
These are kept in your browser's storage on this device. They aren't sent to us:
- the phrases you've saved as favourites
- which phrases you've marked as known in Practise
- light, dark or system appearance
- text size
- Traditional or Simplified characters
- whether you've closed the Add to Home Screen hint
- how many times you've visited, so that hint only shows from your second visit
So that the site works offline, your browser also keeps copies of pages and recordings you've opened or saved for offline.
Clearing this site's data in your browser settings removes all of it.
Visitor numbers
Vercel Web Analytics counts page views. It uses no cookies and only shows totals, such as how many times a page was opened. It doesn't tell us who you are.
If you send a recording or a form
With a recording, we store the audio, the name the speaker wants to be credited with, where they're from, the time you confirmed they agreed, and your email if you gave one.
The name and area are shown with the recording. Your email is private and never shown on the site. It's only used to ask you about the recording.
A report stores what you wrote about the problem. A removal request stores your name, how to contact you and your message, so we can reply.
IP addresses
Your IP address is never stored. When you send a form, we keep a salted hash of it, a scrambled code that can't be turned back into the address, to stop too many forms coming from one place. These are deleted after two days.
Forms use Cloudflare Turnstile to check that a person is sending them, without a puzzle. Cloudflare runs that check.
Removing a recording
When a recording is removed, the public file is deleted straight away and it disappears from the site. The original file is deleted 30 days later.
To ask for a recording to be removed, use the removal form.
Where it's kept
Recordings and anything sent through the forms are stored with Supabase in Singapore. The site itself is served by Vercel.
